New Exploit Could Bring Jailbreak for iOS 4.1

A new exploit credited to @pod2g could bring about a jailbreak for iOS 4.1, according to a series of tweets from MuscleNerd.

Earlier today @pod2g tweeted the following decryption keys:

Crazy timing that @pod2g got latest exploit just as 4.1 went public (lots of work left...keep away from 4.1 for now!)

Update x2:
Exploit is confirmed working for the iPod Touch 4G as well. A source has told BGR that in order to patch this particular bootrom hack Apple would need "a whole new processor rev." A re-flashed or patched bootrom for the current hardware would not be sufficient.

Winning moves

Jailbreakme v2.0 was a great success, and it’s provided a nice leveling point for all jailbreakers and unlockers on all devices at firmware versions less than 4.0.2/3.2.2. We hope that everybody ever interested in jailbreaks or unlocks was able to join in on the jailbreakme bonanza. Those of you who had Cydia capture your SHSH blobs, or those of you who captured them locally, will always be able to benefit from the jailbreakme.com v2.0 release. Congratulations!

Now it’s a few weeks later, and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole. They’re shipping devices with FW 4.0.2/3.2.2, impervious to this particular jailbreak. So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?

No, there won’t be. FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the “cat & mouse” with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, “the only winning move is not to play”.

If the cat & mouse game escalates too quickly, especially during beta FW periods, nobody but Apple benefits. For this reason, there won’t be a 4.0.2/3.2.2 jailbreak specifically during the period where 4.0.2/3.2.2 is the latest public release. At best, some future 4.1x FW jailbreak *may* be compatible with 4.0.2/3.2.2 (but don’t count on that).

P.S.: For those of you with iPhone3G or iPod Touch 2G(not MC version), it’s true you can always use redsn0w to jailbreak your 4.x devices. Don’t let that dilute the above message, though :)

Now Legal to Jailbreak Your iPhone in the U.S.

Feel like jailbreaking your Apple iOS device? Fearful that Apple will set the law on you if you do? Fear not, because a decision just rendered by the U.S. Copyright Office now allows you to legally jailbreak your device for a number of purposes. The alterations to the Digital Media Copyright Act (DMCA) are huge news for both Apple and Apple users alike.

Not only is jailbreaking now okay, but ripping DVDs and cracking video game or software encryption is too, in certain special circumstances. It doesn’t exactly mean it’s open season for any and all piracy, but it does relax things quite a bit, and will probably make it much harder to prosecute those kinds of violations.

The new rules designate six classes of work that are now exempt from prosecution under the DMCA. Here’s the categories, briefly explained:

1. Movies on DVD, when used for educational, non-commercial purposes. Bypassing encryption on said videos is now legal. NewTeeVee has more on this portion of the rule changes.
2. Applications that allow for the use of legally obtained software on platforms that otherwise wouldn’t allow it. For instance, jailbreaking iOS so you can run Backgrounder or Wi-Fi Sync.
3. Applications that allow for the use of cellular devices on networks for which they weren’t originally designed. Case in point, unlocking an iPhone so that you can use it on Sprint instead of AT&T.
4. Video games can be cracked when the reason behind it is to promote, investigate or test for security of a computer, computer system or network.
5. Hardware-dongle protected software for which the dongle is no longer available or is obsolete, rendering the software otherwise unusable.
6. Enabling text-to-speech in ebooks which contain methods to prevent those read-aloud features, since, presumably this limits access by those with disabilities, though that isn’t specific stated in the rule itself.

Now, as you might have guessed, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any consequences for jailbreaking. Apple is still well within its rights to void your warranty, or even to suspend your Apple Store account if it manages to discover that you’re using jailbreak software. But not having to fear the long arm of the law is yet another argument in favor of jailbreaking still being worth it.

I’ve been leaning heavily towards jailbreaking my iPad, mainly because Apple seems not to be in a hurry to get iOS 4 on the device. This ruling pretty much cinches it for me, though I think I’ll do some more research about the effect it has on battery life before I commit. Anyone else motivated to jailbreak because of this news, or was the threat of legal action never much of a scare tactic to begin with?

Geohot has announced that he has jailbroken the iPhone 4.

As far as a release goes, it probably won't happen from me. limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post. pwned4life is a complete invention of some blogger in a basement somewhere. When I said pwned for life, I was referring to the original iPhone, 3G, and Touch; which of course are, by the aptly named PwnageTool. Again, please don't ask for release dates. Every person that does makes me want to release a little bit less.

Considering that there already is a userland jailbreak coming for all 4.0 devices; Geohot may save his exploit for the future.

Update 1 : Geohot Withdraws from iPhone Jailbreak and Unlock Scene

Geohot has also now shut down his Twitter account which has 113,761 followers. Visiting the account now says, "This person has protected their tweets" and no past tweets are viewable to the public.

What's Spirit?
( The easiest jailbreak ever, really quick and simple than redsn0w and Pwnage Tool)

1. Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares.
2 Spirit is not a carrier unlock.
3. If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)

Requirements

1. Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2.
2. An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
3. Any version of iTunes 9 (including 9.1.1).
4. Syncing with iTunes before trying this is highly recommended.

Note: On iPad, all this is still sort of beta. Some packages in Cydia, not designed for iPad, might screw up your system and require you to restore. Be careful. (And no, Cydia's appearance is not final.)

MuscleNerd Demonstrates Spirit Jailbreak on iPad 3G

The "Spirit" Jailbreak

At some point after (don’t ask when!) the iPad 3G is actually in customers’ hands, the first “userland” jailbreak since firmware 1.x will be released by @comex. It’s called “Spirit” and was first demonstrated working on an iPad by @MuscleNerd within 24 hours of the iPad’s release on April 3.

Userland jailbreaks are more troublesome for Apple since they expose security weaknesses that exist even for non-jailbroken owners. As such, Apple is likely to close them soon after they’re made public. One recent example of this is the SMS vulnerability exposed at Blackhat last summer. Apple released new firmware to close that hole within a day.

The Spirit jailbreak is most useful for newer devices: iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and the iPads. Unfortunately those devices are the same ones that Apple can prevent you from downgrading unless you’ve got a backup of your personalized SHSH blobs. Unless you’ve backed up your SHSH blobs for vulnerable firmware versions, you’ll lose the ability to use the current Spirit jailbreak if you accidentally upgrade.

Please take the steps now to backup your SHSH blobs. Use either Firmware Umbrella to create a local copy, or go through saurik’s server. If you are getting an iPad 3G, it’s safest to backup your blobs using Firmware Umbrella, in case saurik’s server gets bogged down with requests.

Other things about Spirit that are useful to know:

• Spirit is an untethered jailbreak.
• Spirit works on all devices. (However, the redsn0w and PwnageTool flows will continue to work on those devices they’ve always worked on)
• Spirit does not include a carrier unlock. (Please don’t bug @comex about that)
• Spirit requires your device to be activated or hacktivated

Please make sure you have your SHSH blobs backed up! While @comex has indicated he’s not going to release the very minute the iPad 3G is out, there’s no telling what Apple might do anyway.

iPhone OS 4.0 Jailbreak Mission Accomplished by Dev Team

iPhone OS 4.0 jailbreak, yes once again Dev Team has done it with in less than 24 hours of release. Earlier this month Musclenerd confirmed that team has ported Spirit jailbreak is successfully ported in to ipad jailbreak with in 24 hour of iPad launch and today Musclenerd posted another video of jailbroken iPhone running on iPhone OS 4.0

First iPad Jailbreak Demoed

Here comes the iPad jailbreak! iPhone Dev Team member musclenerd has released a video showing a rough demo of a jailbreak that's given him access to the iPad's software inner workings. While it's more of a developmental hack than a full-functioning, consumer-grade jailbreak at this point, it's only matter of time before iPad amateurs will be able to unleash the tweak on their own devices. And, of course, that means third-party application installers like Cydia are but a touch or two away.

How does the jailbreak work? The details are unclear. However, since the jailbreak is allegedly based off of a jailbreak for the iPhone called, "Spirit," written by a developer called Comex, it's safe to say that the methods used will be similar when the consumer-grade jailbreak is unleashed.

To jailbreak a phone using Spirit, one only has to surf on over to a particular Web site using the device's internal Safari browser. Grant the site permission to jailbreak the phone, and it'll take advantage of a bug found in the browser to gain root access to the device.

Since the identical bug can be found on both the iPhone OS 3.1.3 the iPad OS 3.2, it stands that this will likely be the easiest way to jailbreak either device—until Applel patches the hole with a security update (as it's done in the past with browser-based jailbreaks).

Jailbreak iPad OS 3.2

The developer behind Greenpois0n – p0sixninja has just posted a screenshot of his jailbreaking tool for iPhone and iPod touch which is said to now bring support for jailbreaking iPad. For those of you who don’t know, p0sixninja is a member of Chronic Dev Team and they have now tweeted about accepting donations to help them get an iPad in order to help them jailbreak it.
